Spirituality and the Tarot |

Sandra Rayatt
The tarot has been for me, and still is a wonderful journey of discovery, an invisible hand placed upon my shoulder guiding me along my pathway in life. It is a world of symbols, pictures and colour, which has been referred to as 'God's picture book' by Lady Frieda Harris, the artist that drew the pictures for the Crowley deck, and in my opinion this summarises it succinctly. For within the pictures of the tarot we see the journey of the spirit.
All seventy eight cards and the symbols used within them can tell the story of our lives. For within the symbolism, the true purpose of our lives can be revealed. The tarot also shows us the challenges that we sometimes have to face and the gifts that we possess to transform them. We are, after all, spiritual beings, and a part of a spiritual and Creative Whole with infinite positive potential.
Incorporated within the symbols of the tarot are aspects of many of the world’s great wisdom traditions, as well as guidance for different ways of living and numerous spiritual paths that we can tread. Within each of the cards there is an aspect of our physical and spiritual selves, and our connection to the Source of all life.
If we look at the twenty two major arcana cards and the symbols within each – from ‘the Fool’ through to ‘the World’ – then we are looking at the journey of our spirit incarnated into a physical existence, starting with its birth (the Fool), through to its migration to the next plane of existence (the World).
On this journey, the tarot can guide us through various stages of growth that are often essential for us to move through in order to evolve spiritually. Each card is governed by the universe and its laws. Many regard the tarot merely as divining the future, because this is how it has been popularly portrayed. But this does not describe the deeper implications of its use. It is in fact a great deal more and can lead us to discovering the authentic spiritual centre of our being and fulfilling our life’s true purpose and meaning.
