May my eyes see with the spirit’s vision.
May my ears hear the sound of a voice long-still.
May my senses feel the closeness of those much loved again.
Most mediumistic development groups sit in a circle. The reason for this is that it places the sitters equally apart and gives them their own psychic and spiritual space. The circle is a symbol of wholeness and unity.
The motive of the circle and of the sitters should be for each sitter to develop over a period of time, psychic power or energy, which will enable the spirit world to make their presence known to the group, and supply them with an ongoing process for development.
If the motive is right, the spirit will bring their own energy and power to blend with the circle. It is through that blending that the sitters will in time come to know who is mediumistic. It will then become the responsibility of the other sitters to encourage the potential medium to develop trust and become responsive to the influences working with them.
This is of course a very basic description of sitting in a development group. We do not wish to presume how the spirit world would wish your circle to develop. This is part of the discovery of the group, and we would not want to interfere with that ongoing process.
Rules and regulations, such as how and how not to run a circle, can be restrictive, not just from the sitters’ point of view, but more importantly from the spirit’s. We suggest that you read the following points very carefully. Remember there is no substitute for sound common-sense and rational judgment.
Elements to Apply to Successful Psychic and Mediumistic Development
1. Sitters
The sitters must be sincere, well-balanced people whose minds are open, and hopefully of a spiritual temperament; whose main aim is to build a link of communication with the spirit world. The purpose of any circle and of those that sit in it, is to develop to the point at which they open to the spirit’s influence, and through that influence discover various truths about the spirit. There must be the clear desire to move from the physical to the spiritual level of perception.

2. Time and Place
Sitting at a regular time and place is important, because it brings discipline into your life and into the development of the circle. As time goes on and somebody shows signs of mediumship, you will realise that this self-discipline has helped establish the right atmosphere and right vibration. This will enable you eventually to unfold the many different levels of mediumship.
3. Potential
Some of the sitters may or may not show signs of mediumistic potential. If you are unsure about your abilities, do not be deterred from sitting and exploring possibilities of mediumistic potential.
4. Attitude
Reverence and the desire to be of use to the spirit world is essential, as well as a willingness to dedicate time to explore and understand the spirit, and the implications of their influence on you and those around you.
5. Co-operation
All sitters will have to learn how to co-operate with each other and with the spirit world; as well as learn how to interpret any experiences they may have whilst sitting. Each will need to keep a level head and not attach any ideas to anything that may happen, until it is proven beyond reasonable doubt.
6. Circle Leader
One among you may be chosen to be the leader of the circle—this person need not be a medium, although you may know of an established medium whom you can trust, who will be willing to act as a leader. The circle leader must be of sound mind: he or she will have a great influence on how the circle and sitters develop. So your circle leader must possess for the sake of the group and the spirit, compassion, honesty of character, fairness and sensitivity to people. If possible, the circle leader should also have a basic grounding in spiritual matters and development.

7. Harmony and Trust
Most important of all, is that the sitters get on well with one another, trust one another, and encourage one another to grow in knowledge and understanding of the spirit.
8. Proceeding with Development
In the beginning, sit once a week, for one hour only. Do not be tempted to sit for any longer, unless directed by the circle leader or by the spirit, or unless all the sitters agree that a longer period would be useful.
You will need to learn how to be still, receptive and open—this is why meditation is of use to you. You will need to be non-judgmental during the period of sitting, and only when the circle has finished and has closed in prayer, will it be appropriate to analyse, constructively, what took place during the circle, how each sitter felt and what may or may not have occurred, etc. But even here you need to keep an open mind.
When you sit for development, your thoughts and prayers should surrender to the influence of the spirit world; so that the all-pervading power of the spirit may awaken and unfold within you.
In the beginning stages of unfoldment you must develop silence, inwardly and outwardly, so that you learn how to relax the body and keep still and breathe in a natural, relaxed manner without strain. You will then notice that as your body and your breath harmonise, your thoughts will start to slow down, your mind will become calm and a feeling of peace will pervade your being. You will then provide the spirit world with the right conditions to start the process of your development. At this stage you cannot do very much yourself, except be open and receptive to all that may happen.
Do’s and Don’ts
(1) Do take note of the feelings that occur, i.e. floating sensations, facial sensations, cobweb sensations, light bands around the head, bodily heaviness, changes in the rhythm of breath, desire to stand, desire to speak, spinning sensations, seeing light, or the feeling of presences—the impression of a man or woman, a tall or short person, a fat or slim person, a strong or frail person, etc. Be aware of anything that feels different from the normal and let these feelings and sensations express themselves.
(2) Do not interfere, but allow things to happen naturally. You do not know at this stage whether a sensation is due to a spirit personality, to the body relaxing, or to the effect of a change in your breathing pattern. Your aim is to see what is happening, so keep an open mind.
(3) Do enjoy, in a relaxed way, all that happens to you, even if it is just a feeling of being relaxed in body and mind.
(4) Do not be nervous about anything that happens, nothing can or will harm you. Just continue to be calm, relaxed and at peace.
(5) Do remember that the spirit are trying to make themselves known through your psychic senses. Realise that they have to work through our mind and consciousness, so their task is difficult. So learn to be patient.
(6) Do not be quick to judge any experience as being genuine or as imagination, or as being your guide or this or that spirit personality, until you are all sure—beyond reasonable doubt, that it is so. This point is of great importance, as psychic and mediumistic sensitivity is very impressionable; so keep a level head at all times.
(7) Do remember that you will go through some very peculiar experiences. The more familiar you become with them, the greater your understanding will be, and the more responsive your sensitivity will be, and the more you will expand the range of your unfoldment.

The Circle’s Motive
The best advice for anyone starting a circle, is to have plenty of patience. Be prepared to sit and let the power of the spirit build. Do not try to force it. This is why it is important to choose your group of sitters carefully, in order that there will be no friction, physically, mentally or spiritually. You must all have a common aim and interest.
A very important aspect of successful circle work is motive. Ask yourself what the motive is behind your desire to develop? It would not be advisable to sit if all you want to do is play about with psychic powers, as this is not enough for the spirit. Your motive must be about selfless service. If it is, you will find that you will develop greater qualities. The spirit seeks to help us rediscover our spiritual powers, which are and always have been inherent within us. But we have to be receptive and willing to develop ourselves for this to happen.
Go quietly about your work. Remember that your prevailing attitude of mind and approach will attract the corresponding influence around you and your circle. So keep a check on your motives and your circle’s motive for sitting.
Understand the importance of what you are about to undertake. Mediumship is about many different things—not just phenomena. It is about the soul’s growth within the individual. It is about developing a deeper sense of responsibility to one’s fellow man/woman, and a greater commitment to Truth and its dissemination. It is about understanding the spiritual laws that govern all aspects of life, and seeking, from within ourselves, and from the spirit, the nature of these laws and how to implement them into our life and work. If we really want to do something worthwhile, it must have a higher purpose. Remember that no time spent in searching for Truth is ever wasted.
We see from this, that our efforts will enable each of us to unfold a richer quality of life and living: physically and spiritually. We can then lead by example, and through that, the all-pervading Power of God and spirit may touch and work through us in order to reach others.

A Personal Realisation
I am a perfect and receptive instrument for the spirit. I am guided by a Higher Power that expresses Itself in and through all that I do.
