It said that God is Spirit, and that both man and woman are also Spirit: the same substance that is God. We are told that we live, move and have our being in a spiritual universe. But what can we do if we have not arrived at that level of prayer where we can discover this truth for ourselves?
‘We should try and develop a sense of God and ourselves as being One and lose any sense of being separate.’
First, we must realise that prayer is simply thought rightly directed. ‘Directed where?’ you may ask. If we go back to the first statement, that God is Spirit, and that man and woman are also spirit here and now and possess within them some spark of the God-Spirit, it follows that for prayer to be effective, we must direct it first within ourselves and commune with the God that manifests as us. We should try and develop a sense of God and ourselves as being One and lose any sense of being separate.
One way to proceed towards knowing this is to try to feel and sense this aspect while using words aloud, such as, ‘I know that God is within me as my own spirit, my own consciousness, my own eternity and my own creativity’.
What is more important than the method you use, is that it starts to open and lead you to building a conscious relationship with God within, and open the creative principal within yourself; which can be achieved by using constructive words, thoughts and feelings.
As we know that thoughts are living entities in themselves, so too must our feelings and words be. That is why we must be selective in what we think, feel and say in prayer, because of the creative principal—the law of cause and effect—which will automatically come into operation.
First realise the God within you, and remember that you do not bargain with yourself, so do not bargain with the God within. Talk to God as you would to a friend or someone you love. Let your prayer be natural and express just how you feel. Open yourself up to God, and as you do, you will find yourself opening up to yourself. This is important, as it will help you to be more self-aware and build a stronger bond between yourself and the Self that is God.
You can also use affirmations to keep your prayer alive and moving. Be positive about yourself and your relationship to God. Realise the true meaning of “the Father and Motherhood of God”: that we have qualities of the both the Father and Mother within us, and that their Love holds nothing back.

Practising Affirmative Prayer
Make a definite time, twice a day if possible, to be alone. Sit down and compose your mind and think about God. Try to arrive at a deep sense of peace and calm, then assume an attitude of trust in that Great Power that is God. Next say to yourself the following:
The words I speak, express the Law of Goodness, and will bring about positive growth, because they are operating on the Creative Power of God that is within me. Good alone goes from me, and good alone returns to me.
You are now ready to expand your positive affirmation. Begin by saying:
These words are for myself (speak your name). Everything I say is for me and about me. It is the Truth about my Real Self (think about your spiritual nature, the Divine Reality of yourself—the God in you).
I know that God is the eternal source of goodness, light, love, wisdom, truth and perfection. These attributes are mine now at this moment, because these things of God are within me and God’s Creative Power is within me. The God that is within me is the giver and sustainer of all life. I know that I (repeat your name) receive from this great power of goodness, all that I need for my spiritual journey. My every need is met now (state your need).
I let go of all negative thoughts—I release them. I let go of all negative emotions—I release them. I let go of all doubts about myself and my pathway in life—I release them. I know that God and the spirit will guide and direct me to make the right decisions in my life. I give thanks, and so it is.
Statements such as this are not so much instructions to God, but are positive statements which remind us that God is limitless, and is expressing Itself as our individualised spirit, and expressing through us that self-same limitlessness. It is God’s pleasure to give, and the more open we are, consciously to receive, the greater will be our capacity to receive. This all operates through the universal law of cause and effect. Look at it reasonably; ‘as a man thinks, so he becomes’. This statement can be seen as true at every level of our being. If we are little-minded, we receive little in return. If we are loving, we will attract love. If we are hateful, we will attract hate. Laughter attracts more laughter. Joy attracts more joy, and so on.
So let us be reasonable, realistic and honest with ourselves, and remember that it is ‘the Divine spirit’s good pleasure to supply without limit’. Let us then be greater-minded, that we may receive greater things.
